Axum - Vancouver

What do you think when you hear about "Ethiopian food"? Well, me, I didn't have any idea of what people were talking about. Even after I was comfortably seated at the Axum restaurant I was still a little bit puzzled, so much so that I made a few faux pas before I learned the right way to eat there. Anyways, the important thing is the food, and the food is great at Axum.

Axum is an omnivore restaurant, but all the vegetarian options are 100% vegan. They serve many kinds of a creamy foods that you should eat with your hands, using an "injera" a kind of sour taste rolled  pancake. The first time I was there, noticing there weren't any forks or knives at the table, I went to ask for that at the counter. I was given a strange look, and only one fork. When I served myself (it was all-you-can-eat-buffet day), I poured one of the creams all over the injeras. Everyone at the table rolled their eyes when they saw my plate. Well, I'm exagerating when I say "creamy" food. It's something between soft solid and creamy, as you can see in the pictures.

Two paragraphs and I still haven't said anything useful about the food, eh? What if I say they serve "Miser wot", "tikil gomen" "kik alicha" and "atkilt"? Translated... : yellow split pea simmered with mild sauce, split lentils simmered in spicy hot sauces, portobello mushrooms marinated and sautéed with onion, garlic, pepper, fresh tomato, herb and spices. And a couple of other dishes.

Yes, as you can notice, most of the dishes are hot and spicy, so have a glass of water close. Eating at Axum is certainly both a cultural and gastronomical experience you won't forget so soon.

The Naam

Located in Kitsilano, The Naam is the oldest vegetarian restaurant in Vancouver (over 30 years) and probably the most traditional one on the city. And more than that, it's open 24 hours a day, seven days a week (it only closes on Christmas). Its menu is huge and diverse, covering from breakfast to dinner and late night meals.

The Naam is ovo-lacto-vegetarian, but it offers dozens of vegan options. For breakfast, for instance, you can have Scrambled Tofu (tofu scrambled with tomatoes, mushrooms, zucchini, red peppers, onions, tamari, oregano and cumin served with toast) with a glass of orange-strawberry juice. For lunch and dinner you may want to try  the deep fried tofu served with teriaky souce as an appetizer and a vegan burger or burrito. They also have pizza, pasta and mediterranean food.

Be warned: the portions are for really hungry people!

The decoration is very simple and casual, with wood tables and chairs. The Naam also helds art exhibitions and concerts of local artists every night.

Apparently some people think fish grows on trees. That’s what I can assume by seeing all those restaurants that called themselves vegetarian but serve fish. Perhaps they think of “fruits de mer”. Would that explain the confusion of these weird people? Well, fortunately in Porto Alegre we have a vegan chef who doesn’t mix apples and oranges (although he could in some desserts). Diogo Celente is the responsible for Prana Sushi, the first and only vegan sushi in town.

“How about transgressing?” With this thought provoking question we are introduced to the mouth watering foods on Prana Sushi's website. The idea is cut out the fish from Japanese cuisine, making it totally vegetarian. If the variety of sushi options is amazing, even more impressive is the look of them, made with remarkable care and dedication. Besides the many kinds of sushi, at Prana Sushi you can also order yakisoba, gyoza and mochi. The dishes are only available on delivery, but once in a while you can try them at Café Bonobo, when “Japanese nights” are held there.

Victoria - The Joint

Two words for you: vegan pizza. In the capital of British Columbia you can find vegan food easily. At The Joint you can choose the veggie topping (like spinach, red pepper, green pepper, onion, pineapple, tomato, black olives, sundried tomatoes, caramelized onions, roasted zucchini, artichoke hearts and much more), the "meat topping"(pepperoni, ham or ground beef) and the vegan cheese.

They usually have vegan pizza ready to take, but you can make your own. I don't remember exactly what I chose but it was delicious. The vegan cheese really melts!

Vancouver - Gorilla Food

Gorilla Food is definitely a unique restaurant in Vancouver. The food served is not only vegan but organic and raw. Yep, they don't cook their foods but that doesn't mean the flavor is away. If you are not familiar with the concept of living food and think it may be limited to sprout salads and dried fruits, wait to see their menu. Burgers, wraps, pies, cookies, chocolate fudge, sandwiches and even pizzas can be ordered, proving they have a lot of creativity. The same taste for innovation we can see in the decoration, mixing modern, rough and artistic.

The small but comfortable restaurant is located in the heart of downtown Vancouver.

In their website they say:
It’s our belief that we can live in the modern world, living as lightly as possible, and that we
can create sustainable healthy culture through the growing of our own food and by creating local webs of self-producing energy and food production.
